January 2014 update

(January 24, 2014)

Another year has seemingly flown by, and yet again I find myself apologising for neglecting this news page. 2013 was an exciting year with projects and collaborations proving fruitful. In brief;

  • My teaching schedule has continued to bulge at the seams; with a constant stream of enquiries into tuition. Although I am still operating a waiting list I do regularly review this and try to get new students 'into the system' even if it is only as a floating student initially (not a regular weekly slot but arranged as and when a space is available). When a permanent position becomes available then this is offered.

  • www.masquerade-music.co.uk (my sheet music publishing Company specialising in accessible original repertoire and resources for woodwind players) continues to go from strength to strength; my '40 Graded Duets' (Grades 1-5, available in Clarinet, Sax, and Flute editions) was completed and the Sax and Clarinet editions (the Flute one has only just been released so give it time ;) have consistently been in the 'Top 10 Bestsellers' in the Clarinet Duets, and Saxophone Duets catagories at www.musicroom.com  . We welcomed Andy Hampton to the Masquerade Music team (creator of the popular Saxophone Basics tuition book, you know, the bright orange one that we all know and love) and published his 'Some Say So' SATB Saxophone quartet piece (well worth a look; very catchy with a funky groove). My Saxofrolic SATB Sax Quartet commision piece was also completed for the Persiflage Saxophone ensemble based in Nottingham.

  • I continued to grapple with technology and discovered the delights of creating QR codes (those funny speckily square images which you scan with your phone to take you to various web links, audio excerpts etc; very 'Star Trek' !) and starting to use Photoshop Elements to create 'New Look' book covers, promotional material, and even a 6ft pop up banner!.

  • My Songs for Claire Suite (published by Spartan Press) appreared on the Trinity Guildhall Bb Jazz Saxophone (Grade 4) syllabus with the movement Living life being selected as an examination option. I am told that the third movement 'Flying Free' will be included on BOTH Bb and Eb Grade 4 Jazz Saxophone list from 2014 onwards. I had the pleasure in accompanying a student on this piece in her exam just before Christmas which felt a little surreal / exciting / scary!

  • I am still really enjoying my own personal projects, particularly learning the piano. I have been really stepping out of the boat and have been brave enough to accompany some of my students in exams (their request not mine! ;D) and even in a couple of concerts. Santa kindly bought me some new books for Christmas and I have earmarked certain dates this year to take exams for my own pleasure and development.

  • I am still proud to be a part of Equinox Saxophone Ensemble, and we released our second CD 'The Equinox Collection' in 2013. This contains some fantastic arrangements (many by members of the ensemble) and received a great reveiew in the Clarinet & Saxophone Socity of Great Britain magazine.

Looking forward to another exciting year ahead (and I promise to update the website more often!).
